When we crossed from Italy into France not too long ago, we happened to make a stop in a deep valley of the Mediterranean Alps; far above us nestled the medieval city of Saorge. The beautiful setting made us venture off our route and ascend the steep road leading to Saorge. It was throughout the centuries a quite populated trading outpost, but declined both in importance and population during the last century. The monastery, which had been founded in 1633, shared this fate and has been converted into a writer's retreat by the French government after the Franciscans abandoned it in 1988 for good.
We met a French theater director in the herbal gardens of the monastery writing on his latest piece; he had spent four weeks straight in the writers retreat and eulogized its tranquility and creative energy.
